This day in the history and culture Of Germans from Russia Belowesch Colonies in Chernigov In March 1767 in the Chernigov province were founded Belowesch German colonies (included 6 settlements) in Chernigov. In 1766 some of our forefathers left Germany to start a new life in what at that time was known as southern Russia. The vast majority went either to the Volga or the Black Sea Regions. A few families proceeded to the Belovezh District where they established the following Colonies: Belowesch, Gorodov, Gross-Werder, Kaltschinowka, Klein-Werder, and Rundewiese. Collectively these colonies are known as the Belowesch Colonies and also include Kreschatten which was established later in 1779. Due to the relative size of these colonies very little history is available. The purpose of this page is to bring together as much information on these colonies as possible to assist in the research of this area. If you are aware of any information relating t...

The kitchen of Russian Germans a hundred years ago Inga Thoman Cooking is an integral part of the culture of every people. It reflects his living conditions, history, national character. Without it, it is impossible to understand the culture of a people or an era. After all, we are what we eat. Since ancient times, the meal has occupied an exceptionally important place in people's lives. Even on weekdays, it was a ritual, consecrated by tradition: the whole family gathered behind it, prayer marked its beginning and end. As for the festive meal, the preparation of dishes for her was not a game of the mistress's fantasy, but the following of the rules handed down from generation to generation. The cuisine of Russian Germans is a mirror of their history. Along with national traditions and songs, the culinary secrets of the homeland of ancestors were passed from mother to daughter. At the same time, the colonists willingly borrowed the ...

THE HISTORY OF RUSSIAN-GERMANS by Dr. Katharina Neufeld The history of Germans in Russia goes back hundreds of years. Their history has developed within the context of a diverse country and population. Russians and Germans had been politically, culturally and economically connected for a long time. The first frequent and permanent relations with Nowgorod were initiated by early Hanseatic merchants in the 12th century. Since the Middle Ages until the 16th century Germans came to Rus (the original region of Russia) and many of them stayed. Starting in the 16th century many Germans moved to Moscow and in the 18th century even further to the rising city of St. Petersburg. Due to the invitation of Katharina II in 1763 thousands of Germans settled in the vastness of Russia. As you can tell the history of Russian-Germans is not just of one but of many different histories that impacted the people. Today we differentiate between four main groups: The largest group of Ger...

Olga Litzenberger The role of Lutherans in Russian history Author´s photo from her FB bio The place and role of a particular faith in public life are not permanent, they depend on specific historical conditions and change over time. Lutheranism appeared in the Russian lands during the lifetime of its founder, Martin Luther (1483-1546). And already from this very time the Evangelical Lutheran Church was of great importance in the socio-economic and political history of our state. Russian Lutherans occupied prominent posts, directed ministries and departments, created parties and public unions, participated in the work of the State Duma. In 1853, the number of Lutherans in the State Council reached 16.3% (9 out of 55 people), in the Committee of Ministers - 11.1% (2 of 18 people), in the Senate - 10.6% (12 out of 113 people) in the governor's corps - 18.7% (9 out of 49 people). From Lutheran families there were: vice-chancellor, senator, memb...

The surplus-appropriation January 11, 1919 the Decree SNK "On the surplus" was issued Note: obviously, being a decree that was applied throughout the territory, it had a huge impact on the German villages, with the tragic derivation, the famine. The "surplus-appropriation" is the compulsory imposition of the obligation to surrender the "surplus" of production to food producers and was one of the parties that conditioned the essence of the economic policy of "military communism". Mostly, of course, it fell on the village, the main food producer. In practice, this led to the forced seizure of the necessary amount of grain from the peasants, and the methods for carrying out the surplus-appropriation procedure were not good: the authorities followed the usual policy of equalization, and, instead of imposing a burden on the well-off peasants, robbed the middle peasants, who make up the bulk of th...
